Science
Purpose of Study (DfE)
A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
In Science at Morgans Primary School, we aim to foster curiosity in all children and give them the confidence and skills to better understand their place in the world and how they can make the world a better place. Our method is simple, we ask questions of the world around us… and answer these questions by doing. We believe that all children should have equal access and opportunity to experience the awe and wonder that science can reveal.
These wheels summarise the working scientifically skills which pupils need to develop in each phase. They can be used to help pupils to self -assess the skills they are using in science lessons. Some classes have them in the front of pupils' books and some classes have them on display to help aid discussion and increase the awareness of the skills that pupils need to develop in science.
