Our excellent Year 6 team consists of Mrs Chadwick, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Thomas and Mrs Carter.
During the year our children have a plethora of learning opportunities that include internal and external activities. In literacy we cover units of work that range from biographies to quest adventures which give the children a range of learning experiences. We aim to link these core subject skills to other areas of the curriculum as frequently as possible, to enrich each individual child’s learning. Our approach to numeracy in Year 6 is to identify the needs of each individual and ensure progression via the use of setting into three groups.
The possible highlight of the year for pupils and staff alike is the residential trip to the Isle of Wight. Our visits have many educational opportunities that cover a wide range of subjects with the underlying aspect of fun.
An important aspect of Year 6 is the preparation of the children for transition into secondary education. We especially concentrate on the social and emotional aspects of change that will impact on each child. We are very lucky to have two secondary school teachers to support our children throughout the year; in French we have Mrs Fogg and to support our higher level maths children we have Mrs Marway, both teachers from Presdales Secondary School. A proportion of time leading up to the early part of the summer term is preparation for SATs, although we are careful to ensure that this does not impact too heavily on the children’s learning.
