  Cartoon Capers Nov 2010

Year 4 had a wonderful 2 days last week, working with a cartoonist Kev courteousy of the County Museum Service Officer, Jane Munns. They produced a class comic each, one involving 'Mr Hardy the Kleptomaniac' and the other, 'Bullgog!' They also studied the painting 'Paris Market', which is on loan from the County art collection. Both classes are producing their own cartoon montage of a market scene inspired by the painting. Here they are working alongside Kev, who was extremely talented and works on the Beano currently. The scrooge posters to appear shortly around the school are an example of his work.

The prize is that their masks will actually be made and presented to them by the Morgans' Children's Council. Here they are with their winning designs.

60th Anniversary Sculpture Winner April 2010

Erin, the winning sculptural artist, has written this explanation of how her design became a reality and what each element represents.

The 60th Anniversary Competition ...

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of Morgans School , it was decided to hold a competition. There were two parts you could enter. One was a piece of writing, but I decided to try for the sculpture category.

Hence 'The Totem Pole!'

My dad came up with the idea of the totem pole but I did the design. The symbols represent each year group, with an attentive student sitting cross-legged right on the top.

Reception Class, at the bottom of the pole, is shown by a child and teacher with a bookcase. Year 1 has sea shells and the sun shining over the beach as I remember winning the sand castle competition.

A recorder and a child playing a recorder is there for Year 2. Mrs Broomfield taught us how to play although now she's retired but I still see her for extra maths.

The swimming child is for Year 3, this is the first year in which we have lessons at Hartham. The noticeable trees, tent and camper are a tribute to Cuffley Camp. The trees are important because we got to hug them and climb them in Year 4.

Sailing at Barton which is a Year 5 option, is a special memory because the carver has put my initials (EC) on the sail. Finally Year 6 is shown by the Leavers' Play, with an actor on stage facing the audience. Just before the seated girl on the top, is Carved 'Morgans Primary School'.

Winning the competition ...

The entries of about 100 designs were short-listed down to around twenty. Four were then chosen as the finalists (including me) and then Mrs Dutt announced the winning design. It was me! I feel delighted with the final sculpture and very proud that it has been made.
